Nicotrol Gum Programme

During the standard 12-week course, Nicotrol gum can be taken to counteract the desire for a cigarette. Whenever you feel like smoking, you take a piece of Nicotrol gum. The maximum daily dosage is 24 pieces of gum so as long as you do not exceed this amount, you have a considerable amount of flexibility in how you use the gum. The average amount would be about 12 pieces of gum a day. Some people may find that they can go most of the day without needing much help but that they struggle with certain social situations or times of the day that exacerbate their craving for a cigarette. This means that these people can take Nicotrol gum when they need it most.

Typically, the first few weeks after you stop smoking are the most difficult to cope with in terms of nicotine withdrawal and this is when people tend to use the most gum. This may mean that you would take one piece of gum perhaps every one to two hours to combat your cigarette cravings during the first two weeks of the course. In the next three weeks, this amount might be reduced to one piece of gum every four to eight hours. Eventually, the last three weeks of the programme, you may only require one piece every four to eight hours. After twelve weeks, you have hopefully reduced the amount of gum you are using to only one or two pieces a day. At this point, you can start to think about not having to use the gum at all. Some people find that it takes longer than this before they can stop using the gum without relapsing into smoking but you can tailor the treatment programme to suit you specific needs.
